• Something That Amazes Me About the Internet

When I think of things to write here, I often find myself stuck. Stuck, not because I can’t think of something to write. I’m stuck because I’m not sure if I want to put those thoughts out on the internet for everyone to read. I stop to consider that, though I have an opinion on a subject, is it one I want to color any image I may want to project.

Let’s face it. Perception is reality. Whatever we would like to believe about fairness and getting to the truth of something or the reality of something, perception is still very much a part of what we think of people, the world around us and even fiction.

Some one may admit to being a fan of some movie or music genre and we automatically think that gives us an idea of what they are like. Or perhaps we find out something about their hobbies, we often categorize people that way. ‘Oh, that person likes to hunt’, so they are a hunter, or maybe they like to play a particular game on the computer, then they become a gamer, or perhaps they like to participate in a sport so they become a jock. What about when something is said inadvertently and then is taken out of context and published everywhere. Whether, the remark was meant maliciously or not, whether it was meant to be enlightening or just a comment. All of these things are perception.

So what does this have to do with the internet and why I get stuck

when I sit down to write an article? Everything. Many people who choose to put their lives online and blog and share through social networking sites, do not seem to realize that they are living their lives in a very public way. They might as well be living in a glass apartment in the busiest part of town where everyone can watch. And with that, regardless of how ‘good a person’ they are if they are not careful and cognizant of what they do and publish, and how they say it, their reputation and image can become something that they maybe didn’t want.

So I think about what I am going to write and how I am going to say it. I consider it carefully. I do not know for sure what I will want to do with my life going forward, I certainly do not want to leave things for a current or future employer to find that might shade their hiring decision in a less than favorable manner.

We want the internet to be free of controls and we want it to be open and in our quest for this, through use, we do not self sensor. While this may be a good thing, we do spend a great deal of time not speaking out against things we know are wrong and just going with the status-quo. And then again, when it comes to what some one did with who at some party and how much they drank, or disclosing your personal opinion of your workplace and it’s inner goings on, well perhaps we should practice a little more self censorship.

What amazes me most about the internet, is not the amount of information that can be found there, it is not the things that I can’t find there, it is not even the amount of content of questionable merit, it is the fact that many people living their lives there are shocked, and often indignant to find that some one has used the information they are freely offered against the publisher. And don’t forget, our phones now come with cameras. It may not be you that publishes that compromising photo of your weekend party, it may, however; be you that pays the price.

If we are going to live our lives in wide open public world of the internet and offer our opinions to the world, we need to understand that we will be judged by our opinions, actions, and examples.

  • The Next 20 Years or So…

In case you did not hear: the Large Hadron Collider at CERN went online this week.

I know, so what has this got to do with anything? Or maybe what is a Large Hadron Collider? And what is a CERN? For the short answer, and the long one for that matter I recommend checking out the CERN website at: http://public.web.cern.ch/public/   The site does a much better job explaining themselves than I will ever do.

    What is important about

the LHC coming online is that it has been 20+ years in development and they are hoping for great things. They hope to recreate in a comparatively small way the conditions that existed a billionth of a second after the big bang in hopes of discovering more about our universe. They are also looking for something called the Higgs Boson, or the God Particle. What’s so big a deal about it? Well, as I understand it they think it will explain why things have mass.

As you might guess, we’re talking particle physics here. You may be thinking so what. Physics and the things that happen in that field have no real impact on my life. They don’t put food on my table or gas in my car or things like that. That would be where you are wrong. Quantum Physics and the amazing discoveries in that field have very much to do with our world. Were it not for quantum physics you would not be reading this article. The likelihood of you having a computer or I having a computer without quantum physics, well, I’m not a mathematician, or a statistician, or even an actuary, I really can’t give you specifics. Suffice to say very unlikely and we’ll call it good.

It is through the incredible discoveries and break-throughs in quantum physics that have allowed for much of the innovation we have experienced in the last 50 years. They have led to discoveries in the bio-sciences, chemistry, the innovations in technology through miniaturization, and accessibility of technology. Remember how cumbersome the first cell phones were? Mine fits in my pocket. And GPS. Something that required systems that only large corporations, governments, or universities had the ability to exploit. Have you used a GPS device recently? Are you a fan or participant of the past time that has evolved from the existence of these devices? And computers. They used to take up rooms and rooms of space. I’m writing this on one that fits on my lap.

These are just a few of the things that have been advanced due to particle and quantum physics in the past and they demonstrate why this new collider coming online, it’s 17 miles in circumference, is so important. Think of what we may find in the next 20 years. Think of the possibilities in all areas of our lives. What might they discover that leads to something that helps with global warming, or with building better structures for hurricane prone areas or allows for better food production or even helps to eradicate some diseases. Think of the jobs it may lead to. Industries that we work in today will evolve into something new, some will fade to make room for new ones. This is only the beginning of life in a new era.

Ok, so is the LHC coming online enough to make me excited and optimistic about the future? Well, yes it would be. However; I found another thing this week that boosts that excitement because it is just more evidence of the incredible things to come.

I read an article this week published in the Wired Magazine online edition. It was about how biologists and chemists have created a proto life. They are working to make it self replicating, and then to be self replicating without that little nudge that is currently required. I may have some of those details a little confused. Check out Wired Magazine online to get a better understanding. The progress made in that area is just phenominal when you think about it.

Self replicating nano size entities may be exactly what we need when we move out farther into the Universe and find ourselves in need of terraforming a planet. Lets face it, we are going to overpopulate this planet and at the moment we are quickly on the road to making it uninhabitable so we will need to find someplace else to live. We will need to make hospitable climates on other planets and it will take time. If we have microscopic or nano sized entities that can do the work for us and replicate themselves so we only need a small colony to get started much the better.

Yes, there are down sides to this idea. Everything has its pros and cons and we will debate them all the way to the ends of the Universe. At lease I hope we will. These things should not be left to those who just want to see what they can do or to only those in power. These will be things that will affect us all and we will all need to have an understanding of them. We need to be educated and concerned global citizens so that as then amazing things to come are realized, we will be able to make informed decisions about their usefulness vs. their dangers. And debate them not on our fear of loosing what we have but on their real merits and possibilities, good and bad.

We must embrace with excitement and wonder what is to come though not blindly. We must also be informed.

I am so excited about what we may see come in the next 20 or so years. It’s thrilling to sit here and think of the possibilities.

  • More Fun with the Weather

It’s hurricane season for the Atlantic basin. Just in case you didn’t know this.

As I write this Hurricane Gustav is battering the Gulf Coast of the USA. We’ve already dealt with Fay here in Florida. It came ashore in Florida 4 times. Not once, not twice, four times. Ok, it was only a tropical storm. I don’t think that matters much to the people along the coast, the St. Johns River and Lake Monroe that are still flooded out.

    And lucky us,

it looks like later this week we will be feeling the edges of Hurricane Hanna. She’s already hanging out in the Atlantic. It looks like it might come ashore around Georgia or South Carolina. Overnight Ike formed. I think it’s a tropical storm already. And I just heard that by the end of the week we could be watching Josephine.

I know that hurricanes are a natural force and occurrence and they are beneficial, particularly for our reefs that are dieing out. However, I’m really tired of these things. It’s only August. We did this 4 years ago, we did this 3 years ago. Do we have to do this again?

Yeah, I know, whine, whine, whine. Yes, I would like some Fontina with that w(h)ine. 🙂

I’m sure there will be more on this subject. Hurricane season doesn’t end until the end of November. We’ve had them into October before so hold on tight.

    Cheers

  • Getting Comfortable…

I’ve been trying to find a place and way to get comfortable with my computer(s). A key point in this is that I’m short.

I have a desktop computer that I have hooked up to a monitor and a printer and sitting at/on a computer desk. I’ve spent way too much money trying to find a chair that is comfortable with the desk. If I get one with arms they are too high for the keyboard tray and so I’m stuck

leaning forward on the edge of the chair trying to type and see the screen. I had one with no arm that solved this problem except it wasn’t very comfortable to begin with. It’s broke recently so I’ve sent it on its way.

I got a laptop a couple years ago and while you would think that would make it easier to get comfortable, well, not always. I wanted to be able to work at a desk and the one the desktop is on it the wrong height in so many ways. I even tried putting it on bricks to get it to work with my chair. I got an arts and crafts table and it works pretty good. It works much better since I got the new IKEA chair. That makes a huge difference. I still have a problem with the desk though. The room I have it sitting in is a west facing room. and on top of that, it faces the window that has mini blinds. It’s great in the morning. In the afternoon, though, when I’m usually in there, the sun comes in, directly in my eyes. I may need to get additional coverings for this window. I could move things but I ahve 2 completely full six foot bookshelves and I have not desire to move them.

So with the laptop, you would think I would just pick up and go to a more comfortable spot. Yeah. I’ve tried the kitchen table. It helps when I’m looking things up in books, which if I’m working on a website, I’m doing that. Still the table’s a little high and then there’s no room to eat at the table. Ok, I know who does that any more?

I’ve tried the couch. That can get very cozy. I’m just not so sure it’s good for my posture as I tend to slouch there, and I really need a place for the mouse. I’ve got this great chair from IKEA, it’s a Poang (spelling is close). I’ve even got the footstool to go with it. I’m trying this out for now. I think it may be just the thing. I just don’t like that the place looks so sloppy when I’m computing in the living room.

Oh well, I suppose if I’m going to get more done on the comptuer I really need to figure out where I’m going to be the most comfortable. I have so many things to do on the computer that I can’t really afford to not find a comfy spot to compute. The added bonus of computing in the living room is that I can keep an eye on the hurricanes. And that is very important this year.

    Cheers

  • Watching History

At the point John Edwards bowed out of the Democratic Primary race for the President of the United States of America this year’s Democratic Convention was guarenteed to be a history maker. Whether Hillary Rodham Clinton or Barak Obama was nominated as the Democratic Pary Presidential Candidate, we as a nation, were finally making some of the strides that so many other countries have already managed to make.

I happened to have the tv on this evening at the point when Charlie Gibson on World News Tonight came on with the Democratic Convention. They were in the roll call. They got to the point where Hillary Rodham Clinton made the motion to end the roll call and nominate Barak Obama as the Presidential Candidate for the Democratic party. After it aired the glint in Charlie Gibson’s eye made me think.

It made me think what an extrodinary job a news anchor or reporter has. To be on the frontline of witnessing history.
