  • Working on Professions and Skills for My Death Knight

Alas, my friends have come back to WoW which means it’s time for me to get out my level 80 Draenei Death Knight and start working on those things that I still need to get up to level. This unfortunately means that my cool Rogue Y hasn’t been getting quite as much love. And as a part of my friends coming back to Wow I am working on an Alliance Warrior, C. I’m going to learn to tank.

So this weekend having been a holiday weekend in the states should be a good time to do all sorts of time consuming things.

I had planned on running dungeons on both Y and C because I figured they were low enough level they would be stuck with the really long dungeons. I need to get a dungeon in for C as I don’t want to level any higher before I start trying to tank. I tried to run a dungeon with Y and decided that I didn’t want to wait the, at least, 30 minutes that was estimated by the dungeon finder. That tells me there aren’t really a lot of people at about that level running on Horde right now. Sigh. I did run a dungeon on the Death Knight, M.

Running the dungeon on M was really a good thing. It let me see how out of practice I am. I sucked at first. Seriously. Ugh. I was almost worthless. It’s actually the second one I’ve made it all the way through this week. I was in Nexus and the tank and healer left and then after about 10 minutes it was just me. Ugh. Anyway, by the end of the second dungeon I was starting to get warmed back up and things were going better.

Dungeons are not, however, how I spent the holiday time in WoW. I have finally been leveling my professions for M. Yep. I’ve finally got the Mining to 398 and I think I’m ready to take that to Northrend. And I’ve finally got the Jewel Crafting up to 350. I’m not so sure that it ready for Northrend but I’m thinking it might be time to try it. I’m otherwise not sure where I’m supposed to get some of the gems that I’m going to need for the new JC patterns that I’ve got. I’ve spent several hours now just flying back and forth over the different areas of Outland to mine up Fel Iron or Adamantite (or whatever it is). A bonus side effect of this is that I now have the Explore Outland achievement. I was also able to get the Skills to Pay the Bills achievement when I got my JC up to 350.

The really annoying thing about the Gems that you can make with Jewel Crafting at Outland level is that no one wants them. The value is fairly low and no one wants them. I was hoping they would be salable much like the low level rings and such are. They sell, not because people want them for what they do. They sell, because they are fairly cheap Enchanter fodder. Meaning, I sell them at low enough prices that Enchanters can afford to purchase them and then disenchant them for the materials. That seems to not be the case with the Gems. Bummer.

At least, as I started getting into the new ores and the new patterns the work this weekend was quite as mindnumbing as say mining for Mithril or Thorium. It’s actually been a bit fun. I know, it’s a game and it should be however, with many of these types of games, much like with life, there are aspects that can be less than fun and so you find yourself putting them off.

I also managed to level my Fishing all the way to 450 finally. That’s got that one done. So with actively working on Mining and Jewel Crafting the only other thing that needs some attention, badly, is my Cooking. Yep, I haven’t been really working on my cooking. It’s sad I know. But I haven’t. Right now my Cooking skill sits at a whopping 137. I’ve got up to making Croclisk Stew. I’ll need to spend quite a while farming Crocolisks for that to not be orange. I suppose I should get to work on that, however, at the moment it seems so much less pertinent to my progression in the game. Ok. I should do it just to say I’ve done it. And that’s really why I want to do it. I want to max out all my skills just to have done it on at least one character. Which means I guess I should be getting back to mining and making gems.

    Laterz.

  • About My Troll Rogue, Y…

So I’ve been playing my Troll Rogue on the first server I started playing on. She wasn’t my first toon there. I tried a couple of others and didn’t really do a lot with her. But lately I’ve been giving her considerable attention and have managed to get her close to 40 in the last few weeks.

I looked back over some of her achievements and found that I created her in early February of 2009 and then didn’t do much with her until November of last year when I did a few of the steps in a couple of the Harvest Festival achievements. I didn’t complete any of those. And then I didn’t really do much until July 2 of this year. This is when I really started working on her.

Ok, so I tried playing another Troll Rogue over on a different sever and decided that since this one, we’ll call her Y, was a bit farther along that maybe I should just work on her. So that’s what I have been doing.

Originally when I created Y I had taken the Enchanting profession. At some point I decided I didn’t really want to do that as I knew it meant she would be poor for disenchanting all the really sellable stuff. So she now is a Tailor and a Skinner. Yes, I know I should have gone Leatherworking with the Skinning except I already have a Leatherworker and, well, this way she has a cash crop so to speak. If I need stuff I just send the mats to the Leatherworker to make otherwise I just sell what I’m not using. I say it this way because I’ve found you need a little leather for those silk pouches.

I’m trying to keep her cooking and fishing up as I go. I’ve other toons that the cooking has been the hardest to level because I didn’t do it as I went along. I’ve not been very good keeping up her first aid though. It’s always something I suppose. It’s a challenge to really keep up all those skills. I’m working really hard on her lock picking right now. I’m just about at 150 and still can’t open those boxes off the shore of Ethel Rethor in Desolace. Very frustrating.

I’ve found that the darts that my blacksmith made for her are just not as effective as the throwing knife I found on an NPC vendor. So I sacrificed some gear score for better damage. I was doing a review of Y’s equipment and found that I really need to upgrade her tunic. It’s the lowest item, next to the throwing knife, that she has and it would help to have something with a bit more stat on it. Guess I need to get busy on that.

Oh, that means I need to do some dungeons. Yep, I haven’t been doing dungeons with Y. I’m a little afraid that I will be totally ineffective and get hammered on by the others in the group. Still I know I will get better gear in the dungeons and it’s good experience. I also have to admit to being just a little daunted at the amount of time some of the lower level dungeons can take. Holy Cow! Could Wailing Caverns be any longer? Ok don’t answer that. You know what I mean though. Really, when am I supposed to eat or sleep?

My current plans are to keep leveling Y. I’d like to at least get her to Outlands. Oh, I finally made it to Badlands. That took some work. I like being able to stealth through the tunnels in Dun Algaz. I didn’t run into the Mountaineers and die like I did when I tried it on my first toon.

The only problem with those plans is I have an Orc Warrior we’ll call P on that server and a DK we’ll call G on that server and I feel some what of a need to work on them as well. If I can get them into the guild Y is in then I may find myself somewhat distracted from leveling up Y. Then again, I’ve been pretty faithful to Y lately so who knows. I really like the lock picking and the pick pocketing. Just run up behind them, sap and then pick pocket. Ok, it’s the small things but I think it’s kind of cool.

And so that’s my Troll Rogue, Y so far. I’ll fill you in on P or G another time.

    See Ya.

  • When Last I Wrote…

This will be short to bring you up to speed. Not that I think that many of you are holding your breath waiting for the next thing in my WoW adventures but what the heck. So when I last wrote I was trying to decide among a shiny new Rogue, Warrior or a Mage on a sever I had relatively recently started playing on. I’m fickle. Or whatever. I haven’t played on that server for a few weeks now. I got my Mage up to 30 and wandered off and worked on something else. What I’ve actually done is gone back to the very first server I started playing on and I have been working on some old toons.

The first server I started out on is one that I am running only Horde toons on. The highest toon I have there is 75. I also have a bunch of lower level characters that I started and then would abandon. I’ve got a trusty Warrior and a Rogue there as well as on the newer to me server. So I decided to go back to playing those guys. I’ve gotten my Orc Warrior up to 27 and my Troll Rogue up to 37. I’ve been playing the Rogue quite a bit. I’m going for DPS with both of those characters and really enjoying it so far. I guess I’ve figured out which is more my style. I was lamenting that I was a bit frustrated with the play style that comes with being a caster. Just takes too long. *sigh*

But wait, this too may pass. I’ve been thinking that I need to go ahead and get me a level 80 on this server and so I may go back to playing the B’Elf DK there just to have an 80 with access to better stuff. I am also thinking of /gquit her current guild and have her added to the guild my Troll Rogue is in. I may even add my Orc Warrior to that guild too. Then again, I may go back to playing my 80 Draenei DK over on the Alliance server. So stay tuned. It could all go crosswise again.

  • Can’t Quite Decide

So as I’ve been going along playing my shiny new Troll Mage, I find I miss a certain amount of the play style of my Draenei Death Knight. Yes sadly, while I stand back and cast spells I miss a certain amount of the rush in and get in the middle of it that is part of the play style of the Death Knight. There is a bit of satisfaction gained in melee play. The feeling of really getting in there and bashing virtual skulls only comes with melee. Casters just don’t have that.

Don’t get me wrong, casters, when soloing have to deal with the mobs up close and personal. That’s for sure. And no a DK doesn’t always have to get right in there to get things done. There are some ranged attacks and for lower level mobs that’s all they need. For a caster, that is your main bag of tricks. Yes, there is the staff or wand for up close and personal but let’s face it unless your spell has a range limit, you are going to use your spells they just hit harder. And they take time to cast, most of the time.

So as I was playing my Mage I was impressed by an Orc Rogue. The speed with which he was able to dispatch mobs was impressive. Ok he was twinked. He wore heirloom gear. Still, watching him made me think that a Rogue could be a lot of fun. So in addition to my shiny new Mage, who I’ve leveled up into the 20’s now, I have also rolled a shiny new Rogue.

My shiny new Rogue is also a Troll. The base characteristics of the Troll, to me, make them ideal for Rogues. The rejuvenation helps, the ability to get out of some snares, and the dual wield option are definite pluses for starts. And so another new toon to level. I’ve chosen the skinning and tailoring professions for her. I figure, the skinning should help with the anatomy specialty that comes with it. And tailoring, well someone needs to do it. This way I can make some bags for all those poor lower level toons I now have on this new server that need more bags.

If that weren’t enough, well, I decided to try out the Warrior. Yes, I turned right around and created a shiny new Warrior. This one is an Orc. Let’s face it, on the Horde side, really Orc and Warrior are almost made for each other. So I have a lovely new Orc Warrior. She’s within a couple of levels of the shiny new Rogue.

I’m not sure who will end up being my main on this server. I’ll just have to see who I end up leveling highest first. I classify main as the highest level and most played and loved toon. At the moment, it’s my Mage. Mostly because she’s the highest level .

I just can’t decide what style I want to play, ranged and soft, melee and not so soft but quick, or melee and with reasonable armor. It’s ok. I’ll likely through more in the mix before I’m done.

  • Opportunities

In this lull between Ice Crown being open and Cataclysm coming out I find myself without my usual companions in World of Warcraft. Some of my real life friends have drifted off and some have just taken break from the game. They don’t want to level another character until Cataclysm because there will be new races and all, or most of, the beginning content is going to get all changed around and ripped up so why do it now when they will be doing it again in a few months. Me, I’m using it as an opportunity do enjoy the game on my own. I’ve started fresh on a new server.

I noticed when I was in random dungeons with my Death Knight that is seemed I kept running into some a lot of cool people from this one server. So I decided, with all my friends off doing other stuff and requiring little of me, this would be a perfect time to start out fresh on a different server where I don’t know anyone. I chose the server where those cool people were from and made me a Mage. Oh, my Death Knight is Alliance. I have to confess, I really only like playing the Draenei on Alliance side and I wanted to do something different. So I chose Horde. This means I won’t be able to be in the same guild as some of those cool people. That’s ok. I chose Troll. I understand they will be getting their own home city with the next expansion. Or that’s the rumor anyway. So I thought this would be fun.

Really, it’s because I was in a sunny Island type of mood one day and the Trolls have that sort of feel to them. So I have a brand new, Troll Mage. Ok, not so new. I’ve had her 2 weeks now and I got to level 20 this weekend. Oh man! I couldn’t wait to get my mount. Whew!

It just takes so much longer to do anything until you get your mount. Just before I got it I was working with this Orc Rogue that was decked out in heirloom gear and quick as can be. He helped me finish a quest that got me to 20. He asked me if I had any 80’s. I of course admitted that I had none on this server. He said he had 4 and one is a Mage and they are a lot of fun. That’s not the first time I have heard that. And I’m just starting to see why. As a clothie, it can be tough to do some of those quests and as a caster, holy cow. However, I just got Pyro Blast. That helps. Yeah, it takes a freaking long time to cast, but if you cast it first, before you are getting attacked, it can take the mob down by a third to half before it even gets to you. Now I’m really looking forward to progressing.

I’ve joined a guild. I signed a charter for one and got booted and then got asked to join another. They/we are trying to grow and get to raiding and I was asked if I had any 80’s. And so I answered. I had considered making a Death Knight on this server to have a higher toon. I think though, if I do, that I won’t be rushing right through to 80 like I did my other one.

I want to enjoy the game. I want to experience all the parts of the game. I don’t want to just rush to get to end game stuff because all the rest is obsolete or doesn’t matter. My friends with several 80’s, they have been playing for years and have seen and done all of it several times over. I haven’t. So I won’t be rushing and pushing through to get my Mage to 80 in 2 months. If I happen to… right, like that’s going to happen…fine. I am going to level my professions as I go and reap what rewards I can and I’m going to try to do dungeons at the different levels to get to experience that part of the game. This is my opportunity to do just that. It should be interesting. Then again there is always the chance I will get to 75 and get stuck in Grizzly Hills again. That would be sad. Wish me luck.
