• Pending Additions to Site

    Good news!

We will be adding a new section soon.  It will be another Blog type section. This one will be dedicated to games. Computer games, online games, and any other games that come to mind and strike us for writing about.

Our first author for this section is not your typical gaming type. They are by no means an expert on the subject. They don’t have 50 level 70 or 80 characters in WoW. They don’t own castles in UO or any other world. They play a few games and have some opinions they would like to share. They aslo have an interesting perspective on games, particularly MMO’s and Virtual Reality. This lack of ‘expertise’ with interest in perspective is why we have chosen this author.

If response turns out to be good for this area we may consider additional authors and perspectives.

We look forward to the launch of the Games section and it’s future.

    Cheers

  • Checking out Moodle

I have installed, or had the automated system with GoDaddy install, a program called Moodle.

It appears to be open source software. I had it installed by the GoDaddy system, as it is a part of the software package available with my GoDaddy hosting, so it was an easy installation process.

Moodle is a CMS (content management system) that appears to be geared specifically towards online courses. There is a lot to it. It looks to have many components to it to make it very extensive and robust.

Unfortunately, because it is geared towards online courses and that is what I am evaluating it for, I am a little lost. I am not an instructor and so lack in the practice of lesson plans and the like. Because of that I will be looking over the program from an administrative perspective and working with an instructor to test the ease of use aspects of it. I will also be looking at the customization options available with Moodle.

Obviously, with the ‘to do’ list above I have not completed my evaluation of the software. I’ve barely begun it. I will be posting more about it when I have better information to provide.

    Cheers.

  • A Little More on Templates

So now I’ve switched this site over to one of the main templates that domes with Joomla!. It’s pretty good as far as layout and features that it includes. You get new flashes and polls and  latest news and most popular.

I like that the  spacing doesn’t seem off in certain areas. Like the text editor where I write these little bits. It fits within the template nicely and I don’t lose the last 2 or so characters like one of the other templates. It’s nice and clean looking. And while the white background maybe a little boring to some I think it makes things more navigable and readable.

I have managed to modify the top header a bit to include a graphic of the site name. I may work on the fade part or the background bit soon. Just to see what sort of different look I can get. I may even add back some things that I’ve temporarily turned off. I need to get some better graphics to go with things like on the weblinks page.

Still it’s getting there. I’m not sure where.

    Cheers.

  • Libby’s on the Label

Do you remember the commercials from a while ago that had the catchy jingle:

When you got Libby’s, Libby’s, Libby’s on the label, label, label you got goodness, goodness, goodness on the table, table, table.

Yep! Now you’re stuck. You remember it don’t you?

The commercials were usually for things like canned corn or green beans or such. Libby’s also makes canned pumpkin. Most people forget this except around this time of year when they decide, if they are adventurous, to make pumpkin pie, instead of just purchase one. I’m not really into making pumpkin pie. It’s good and all, just not my favorite. I like something that I remember my mother making. Pumpkin Bread. Oh yeah.

So it’s the time of the year when pumpkins come out to play and are more likely to be on the menu in a desert fashion than at any other time of the year. I was grocery shopping a week or so ago. I wanted Pumpkin Bread. I would have settled for muffins even. I found some pre-made. They just didn’t have the right color, a little too light to be real pumpkiny. I decided I would make pumpkin bread myself. I bought my can of Libby’s, Libby’s, Libby’s and headed home only to discover I did not have a copy of the recipe for the beloved pumpkin bread. Mind you, I’ve not made it since I moved out of my parents home. That has been many years.

I asked, or mentioned the need for this recipe to my mother a few times. She suggested checking the back of the label. It wasn’t what I wanted. So I went online. Thank heavens and whoever else for the internet. Fortunately Libby’s has a lovely website listed that takes you to a place full of recipes. I looked up pumpkin bread and got 4 pages of recipes. I found one that looked easy and close to what I think my mother used. I had to go out for things so while I was out I got the rest of the ingredients that I didn’t already have. I came home and in amongs many other things. I made Pumpkin Bread.

It smells like it’s supposed to. The batter tasted like it’s supposed to. Remember licking the bowl after the batter was in the pan? I baked it. It makes my place smell so good. Oh yeah. I got it out of the pan still warm. I had to cut it. Oh my.

That certainly satisfies that need for good ol’ Pumpkin Bread. I don’t even need the Pumpkin Pie. I’m good for the holidays now.

I’m off to spoil my dinner with another piece of bread and my iced tea.

    Cheers.

  • Festival Weather

The weather seems to be trying to cool off in our little area of the planet. As a result, it seems to be festival season.

It must have started at the beginning of October.

That first weekend we had here the Greek Festival. It was a lot of fun! And the weather was really nice. It was sunny and a little breezy. Not so warm that you couldn’t enjoy dancing with everyone and not so bad that sitting in the shade was just like a sauna.

The next weekend was an Autumn Art Festival. It was a beautiful weekend for it. I didn’t go. Still it was sunny and not too warm.

I suspect there was something going on somewhere last weekend though I didn’t know about it. Besides, I was a sick and didn’t need to be out infecting the world. Still I did note that it looked like it would have been a good weekend for some event.

This weekend is the Serb Fest. We went to that yesterday. It was very nice. It wasn’t too warm. I even got a little cool by the end of the day. The breeze was just a little on the cool side. So those dancers in those very warm costumes had to have appreciated that part.

Next weekend we have a PowWow here. It looks like we’ll be getting a cool front towards the middle of the week. That could end up as a benefit to the even goers. the PowWow usually isn’t under any shade and so you sit out in the full sun and weather. And the dancers, we’ll those wearing not so much may not enjoy it, then again, they do work up a sweat.

Beyond that I’m not sure what all is happening.

In any event, the numbers of festivals and outdoor things happening indicate we are getting into the cooler weather season and so the rest of the holidays must be right around the corner.
