• Fritzzing Away Time…

I thought about calling this the evils of Facebook. Oh, don’t get all…whatever, on me. I’m referring to the way you can find yourself lost in the land of Facebook and not even realize how much time has gone by. Of course there are other things that have this effect as well.

I recently signed on to Facebook. Mostly because I was being told that it has some features and functions that would work really well for this site I support for this organization. So I figured I’d better sign up and check it out so I could see what they were talking about.

It’s quite amazing. As soon as I filled in a bit of information I was being suggested to add all these people as friends. Amazingly enough, a few of them are people I know and even some I went to school with. It’s turned out pretty cool too because a couple of them accepted my friend request. I’ve reacquainted with someone I’ve known since grade school. Nice treat.

I find myself spending a little too much time going through the suggestions of people to add to my friends. I even had to get out a year book or two to see if I know that person or not. What I’ve discovered is that the sight will suggest people from the school you went to from around the same time you were probably there. It’s pretty cool programming and social engineering.

Then there are the little casual games. The can get addictive. Especially those puzzle games. Like the gem or jewel ones. Holy cow. I’ve spent way too much time trying to get the highest score. I didn’t know I was that competitive.

It’s a great time sink if I’m bored. I can be on there playing a silly little game or surfing through suggested friends. Or looking at the profiles of the people already on my friends list. Hmm.

There are other ways to fritz away time. I’ll bet you have some good ones. Things that you do because you just want to do it for a little while and that little while suddenly turns into a big while. Got a favorite time sink or thing you do that fritzzes away your time? Share.

    Cheers

  • Planning for My Next Adventure

After my adventures with vacation in New Mexico and Oklahoma I got to thinking about what my next adventure should be. I’ve been thinking about the places I’ve been that I would like to go back to and then all the places I would like to see that I’ve never seen before.

There are quite a few choices out there. I live in Florida so a fairly close and short adventure would be to take another trip to the Florida Keys. I’ve been a few times, always with someone. We’ve always stayed in the Middle Keys area and driven on down to Key West to see things. So I’m thinking about taking a long weekend, not this one, and drive all the way down to Key West and stay in a Bed and Breakfast there. That would be cool. I should write that down.

    A little farther away,

involving more money and time and a plane ticket is San Diego. I used to live in the area. In fact I graduated High School there oh so many years ago. I’ve been back once since then, just for a weekend when I was living in Phoenix. Something I was doing earlier today got me thinking how I miss the Pacific Ocean. Yes, I live near the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Coast. It’s really not the same. Here we have a reef some miles off the coast that keep the Ocean’s fury at bay except when there’s a tropical system passing by. The waves are often small and not very predictable. And along the shore it’s flat with a horizon of mostly hotels and businesses. I remember larger waves and cliffs in some places in Southern California. Oh and COLD water. Here, at this time of year, it’s almost bath water. What is up with that? Hmm. So maybe I’ll make a visit to San Diego again soon. I have no idea where to stay. I guess I’ll have to start doing some research. We’re coming up on the winter holidays season soon so it may have to wait until after the New Year. That should give me some time to get things figured out. I can’t wait to see Old Town and Balboa Park again. They are still there aren’t they?

I even have a couple of places out of the country that are on my list. Ok. I have a few. Some of which I think others will think are odd. Oh well. So my partial list includes, Sweden, Germany, England, Ireland, Andalusia, Spain, Turkey, Greece, the Carpathian Mountains, France, Denmark, and Italy. I haven’t really give thought to which Asian countries I’d like to visit, nor the South American places or African. Maybe because there are already so many places on my list that I’m not sure I’ll get to them all. I’m sure I’ll be adding to my list and it will include places I hadn’t thought of before.

I’m thinking of making Sweden a top priority. For a long time I’ve felt this draw to visit Sweden. I had a Swedish penpal when I was in school and even took Swedish language lessons from a private tutor for a while. I know many people there, or I think many people there also speak English. However, I think it would be good to refresh and improve my Swedish language skills, or at least my vocabulary. I’ll probably only be able to go for a week maybe two at a time so I think I’m going to want to find an area I want to concentrate on. I guess I could find a tour group sort of thing. I have a feeling after I go the first time that I will want to go back to see more. So I could either make the first trip an over-view sort of trip or I could just start in say the southern area or Stockholm and then the next trip see another area. Any suggestions?

There’s always so much to see and do. I think it’s time I want to start doing that.

    Cheers

  • News From Online Games – A Couple I Play Anyway

So there has been some recent news in the land of WoW and the realm of Eve. Or that should probably be something else. Anyway…

Starting with Eve Online. I happened to be in a bookstore last week and walked past a paperback novel from Eve. Didn’t know they had novels for the game. Not too surprised since they have them for WoW and Warhammer and others no doubt. Still, I didn’t think too much of it. Until I happened upon an article online about Dust 514. I think that was the name. Anyway this is supposed to be a console game tie-in to Eve. The difference being that Dust takes place planetside. Hmmm. Could be interesting, or not. In any event the article mentioned that hints to this or what it might be about might be gleaned from the pages of the new Eve novel. Ok. I’ll bite. I’m still reading it, give me a break I just got it last night and I had to work today. Sheesh.

And yet that wasn’t all the news from the universe of Eve Online.

Seems the powers that be over at CCP have decided to get tough with those who farm resources and sell them to make lots of ISK to sell to other players that don’t want to earn their virtual living. What seems to have happened was that during one of their maintenance periods recently they locked out or banned, I’m not sure which, a bunch of accounts associated with ISK selling and resource farming. This dropped CPU cycles on the server significantly. What this means for us who play, more system resources, maybe a little less lag, and asteroids to mine in mid way through the week. Hooray! I’m a miner. It’s really irritating to log on think you will go do a little mining near by only to find the asteroid belt you just got to completely stripped of anything to mine. So you move to another one to find the same thing. After doing this a few times and even adding a few new asteroid belts to your bookmarks, you give up and go home empty handed, or with an empty cargo hold as tends to really happen. So the banning of the farmers using macros and bots it a great thing. I was in an asteroid belt yesterday with plenty to mine and was able to go back to it again today and still had stuff to mine. Way to go CCP!

And now to WoW, World of Warcraft. There is news of a new expansion to come. It was rumor before Blizzcon which just ended and has now been made official. They’ve got a website for it and all kinds of stuff. I have at least one friend that is ambivalent about it. He’s not really happy that the level cap is only going to 85, especially if it’s priced as a full expansion. He’s disappointed about some of the stat changes like things like attack power going away and all that. He seems ok with the idea of reforging and he’s kind of ok with the new secondary profession of Archeology, though he thinks it amounts to adding religion to the game. I can’t say I’m really concerned about some of that. I am a hunter in the game. Yes, I know the opinion of hunters. Please, it’s ok. I try not to be one of those hunters. And as you might have guessed, I really can’t give you the stats on my armor or weapons or anything like that. I can tell you I’m a level 74 hunter right now. I have skinning and leatherworking. My skinning is maxed. I carry a gun of some sort and a two handed ax. I change my armor if the piece I made or picked up protects me better. Something made so much easier to determine with one of the last patches. Thank you  Blizzard. So for me to be upset, annoyed or disappointed about some of what my friend is concerned with well I can’t muster it.

So more about the new expansion, you know you can look it all up probably on the WoW site. Anyway. I’m interested in the Archeology profession. I think that will be interesting. Level 85? I may never reach level 80 at the rate I play. Oh, new races. Worgen for Alliance and Goblins for Horde. I’d play a Goblin. The Worgen might be the only really cool looking race for the Alliance. I can’t wait to see how things turn out as they tear the lands asunder. That should be interesting.

And that would be the cool stuff I’ve come across lately. I’ve not been playing too much so haven’t had much to report there. It could change though, I’m getting closer to that 80 mark in WoW and with the mining field opening up again in Eve, I could find myself spending more time there.

    See you in the machine.

Edited to correct the name of the Eve console game. It did say Dust 451, this has been corrected to read Dust 514. 04-Sep-09
